According to the US Department of Energy, a well-maintained heat pump consumes up to 25 percent less energy than a neglected heat pump. Unfortunately, routine maintenance isn’t always enough to keep your home comfortable and your energy bill low.

Problems with you heat pump can be often solved by simply referring to your unit’s trouble-shooting manual. However, sometimes the solution to those problems lies only in the hands of an experienced HVAC technician.

No Heat

Your heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat from one place to another. It cannot heat your home without it. When your system leaks refrigerant, it becomes drained of the fluid it needs to work properly. Heat output drops as the system loses refrigerant, and eventually, the system completely breaks down. If you see any fluid leaking from your heat pump, call us immediately.

Excess Ice Buildup

It’s normal to see ice on your outdoor unit during cold weather. However, if the entire unit is encased in ice, it’s possible the system defrost cycle has failed. Excess ice buildup will eventually cause the unit to stop working, but before that happens you’ll see a serious drop in heat output. If ice starts taking taking over your system, don’t wait to call a technician. The problem will only get worse and you’ll spend more for repairs.

Blower Noise

If the blower in your heat pump is making more noise than usual, it could be a sign the it’s motor is failing. The blower motor pushes heat through the air ducts in your home.

If the motor burns out, your home will no longer receive heat, even if everything else is working. Any rattling, screeching or clanging are signs the motor needs lubrication or contains worn or broken parts.
