Refrigerant is what turns warm air into cool air. It absorbs the heat from the outside air and lowers its temperature. The AC blower then pushes the cool air through your ducts and into your home. Your air conditioner has to maintain a certain volume of refrigerant to effectively cool your home. If your AC unit loses refrigerant, the whole system has to work overtime to compensate.

Refrigerant is probably the most important part of your air conditioner and it’s not always easy to tell if you have a leak. However, here’s a few signs your unit is losing its refrigerant.

Your Electric Bill is Higher

Refrigerant needs a certain amount of pressure to absorb heat from the air. With less refrigerant available, every other component has to work extra hard to create that pressure. Your unit sucks up more electricity and your electric bill goes up.

Your Unit Runs Constantly

Its 90 degrees outside but your thermostat is set to 70. With less refrigerant, the air coming into your home is warmer than it would be with the correct amount. Your AC unit has to pump more air into your home to satisfy your thermostat, and therefore, has to run more.

The Incoming Air is Warm

When the incoming air isn’t cool anymore, that’s a sign there’s simply not enough refrigerant in your air conditioner to cool the air. When there’s not enough refrigerant to remove heat from the air, the air stays warm.
