Here are a few signs your furnace is reaching the end of its lifetime:

Your energy bills keep going up. An older furnace has to work harder to produce heat than a newer one. Over time, parts become corroded and pipes become clogged. Every defect, regardless of size, slowly chips away at the efficiency of your furnace. As efficiency goes down, cost goes up.

Your furnace is noisier than usual. Rattling could mean loose parts. Humming could mean a fan or motor is failing. Squealing could mean loose bearings or a deteriorating belt. A little furnace noise is normal, but a lot is sign something is beyond repair.

Rooms in your house have different temperatures. This is the result of an old, inefficient furnace trying to push hot air through an outdated duct system. Heat is lost as it travels through the ducts while the furnace isn’t able to push the heat to each room.

Even though your furnace may work just fine, it’s likely more expensive to operate than a newer model. As your furnace ages, it looses efficiency. Current-production furnaces actually have higher efficiencies than your older furnace did in its prime. The money you’ll save by upgrading to a new furnace will likely cover its cost within a few years.
